I know most of us in this forum have probably played at least one or two of these, and mostly likely it was a DBZ one, but that's not what this is about. This is more about whether they are fun and if you can appreciate the characters without watching (or reading) the anime (or manga) that they are based on.
For a specific example, I will use Victorious Spirits Portable. It's a PSP boxing game based off of the Hajime no Ippo manga. It is important to note that it is based on the manga as the characters look a little different in the anime and, oh yeah, the manga has 839 chapters out at the time of posting, and 80-something released volumes. This means that the game has a lot of fighters, but in all honesty, I am finding it doesn't matter. As the game spans most of the series, it cannot get into the characters and they all just seem insignificant and you don't really care about them. It also doesn't help that the characters control just about the same and even look rather similar at times.
However, lets take into account a game like DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi X. This is a series that has a huge amount of fighters (although some are mere clones of others) which still seem to be cool even without seeing the series or the arcs from where they come from.
I suppose that I have came to the conclusion that some series just work better than others when it comes to a game. What fighting games have you played based on animes that you may or may not have seen, and where they any good?

I think that it goes along the lines of variation. Now im not saying that ippo isnt amazing, but a human boxer is. . . a human boxer. However, with DBZ you have these big nasty guys then theses little ones, pink blobs, green men. Young girls, old hags, ect and forever.
Its a question of visual variation over play variation! I think.
