HandwritingSo today was my first day back in classes. It was actually pretty fun! I had japanese in the morning, a two and a half hour break, then Typography. However i also realized that tuesdays are going to be handwriting pretty much. In japanese I practice writing the characters from the language repetitively, with alot of attention paid to the way the strokes are made and to the forms.
Then after my break(which i shall always use to complete my japanese homework and do extra practice on the language if time permits) I go to typography. Now its mostly Western typography with the occasional class on eastern types, but oh how horrible my handwriting is!
The class is highly based on doing out the typefaces by hand! Which will take a very very very long time(especially tonight's homework!), however the professor is insane. He actually writes in different fonts. Not like hand writing fonts but like swift and accurate renditions of times new roman and baskerville. When he was showing us various fonts on the chalk board he wrote out the name of each one with its font......

Being able to write in different fonts is insane! I have spent many years cleaning up my handwritting. I can keep mine nice and neat, but when I will be the only one reading my writing, it gets messy and small fast.
I wish you luck with typography and I hope you get to manage cleaning up your handwritting.

Yeah that sounds like a bit much and like a class that I would auto fail with considering just how horrid my handwriting is even when I try. Some people can do tht stuff, others are just not able to at all.

That class just sounds like a ton of work, and I wonder how necessary it is in the age of technology. Sure it is a good skill to have, but now a days it also seems slightly obsolete.

Well its only obsolete in one sense. In another when you do nice handdrawn type it appears to be really awesome and has a sense of romanticism. On the note of handwriting, i think that it is different. I will never have good handwriting, but if i take my time i can write very neatly, but its mroe like im drawing the letters. However by the end of the semester as a side goal i would like to be able to write in Times.
