I have never been more ashamed.

California, how could you approve such a hateful proposition?
Koku

Well this is a very heated discussion and before it becomes bad let's remember that anything said here is not necessarily what LE believes in, and that this should stay pg 13.

I personally do not find this to be as big of a deal. I can go either way wit this. Marriage is usually something dealing with religion and as such the Government has no right to makes laws about it. However, I also feel that gay marriage is not that bi of a deal as it is just giving a label to the relationships between the two. I am not very religious either, so that may be one reason I am not against gay marriage. To make this clear, I am a heterosexual, so it is not like I have anything to gain by saying this either.

Prop 8, formally titled "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry" is not something that we should be worried about as the California supreme court will mostly likely just override the vote and still keep it. It matters not what your definition is of marriage, the fact that they called it the elimination of rights means that it most likely will be not supported by the supreme court (even if its just a states) who tries to protect people's rights.

Because the actual population of america lacks education, and th phrasing is very confusing!

I'm not saying that I really value marriage in the typical sense or anything, but the fact that people would approve a proposition to BAN someone's right to marry who they want, is absolutely ridiculous and makes me so furious

You should not forget that despite that church and state are separate, religion still plays a part in making laws (mostly christianity).  The ones who proposed the law may be republican/conservative, and most likely a devout, religious person.

I personally believe you should be able to marry the person you care and love for, but, so I think, its only legal in two states, here and california.

And yes, it is stupid.
Delilah

It passed?!
I am ashamed. I understand that marriage, say in a church, is religious and homosexuality is a sin, etc. However I do not believe in restricting people's rights the way that this proposition has.

How could California approve this. Grr. At least Obama won. So for me that's one win.

I think this issue is pretty bad, but I think one of the big things is the word marriage which was used to imply a religious affect. So this law was not necessarily needed, it just prevents the churches from being hassled as much. I think that there should be a legal way to unite the two people, even if by the other term they wanted to use. People may feel they are becoming second-class citizens, but the truthfully it is the best that the government can do less they make marriage a non-religious event.

That's the thing though, in the beginning of marriage as an act, it had nothing to do with religion whatsoever, or even love for that matter. Marriage began as a way to unite two families or areas or whatever, for financial, or political gain. Jon Stewart, while very liberal, explained marriage in a way that I very much agree with, link is below:

The whole clip is good, but the definition is around 2:45
