Fort Kent: Two charged in burglary of florist
By Jen Lynds
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - Bangor Daily News
FORT KENT, Maine - Two men have been charged with stealing $20,700 from a Fort Kent florist and allegedly using more than half of it to go on a lavish shopping spree.
Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud said Monday that Michael Russell, 27, who is originally from New York but had been working in the area, has been charged with numerous crimes stemming from the July 31 burglary at Pelletier’s Florist at 500 W. Main St.
Also charged was Jeffrey Nadeau, 20, of Eagle Lake.
According to Michaud, the men broke into the floral shop by cutting a hole in the greenhouse to reach the store and a safe inside the building. They then stole $20,700 that was in an envelope inside the safe.
They immediately divided up the money between them, according to Michaud, and went shopping at numerous stores, buying $200 shirts and other clothing and items.
The two were arrested when police received a tip that Russell had bought a used car that he planned to register in Saco. When he tried, he was apprehended and detained by the Saco Police Department.
Russell handed over $6,400 to police.
He also told investigators that Nadeau was in Portland. Nadeau subsequently was taken into custody by the Portland Police Department. Nadeau had $2,400 left in his possession, which he had put in a bank account.
Both men were brought back to Aroostook County by police on Aug. 8.
Both have been charged with burglary and theft. Russell also has been charged with illegal attachment of plates and possession of stolen property.
Bail was set at $20,000 surety or $10,000 cash, and both remained in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton on Monday.
Fort Kent police Officer Richard Martin investigated the incident.

What stupidity!! I live in the same town as the shop that was hit and I knew both of them! One was a good kid (jeff) and the other (mike) I never liked to begin with. No one was all that surprised to hear about mike pulling off this stunt, but everyone was surprised to hear about jeff's involvment. It has been all over the town. they werent even smart enough to stay low for a while either!!
ps, I posted under media for it was in the news now. figured it was appropiate here

What that is pretty sad. Why would anyone do what they did. If oyu steal money, the best thing to do is to not put it in a bank but more or less under your bed so-to-speak. They must have planned for how to break in, but they really should have planned what to do with it a lot more. _________________

Its a small town, so its the gossip of the town now. Everyone has heard about it. I'm just glad the cops caught up to them. Not that I care for the cop involved (he's a jerk). As for the planning, they definately did a bad job in that department. One of my friends was housing him down in Portland and was told that he recieved a refund from a college loan for $5,000. My friend said whatever and was later shocked by him spending 1,400 dollars on clothes and a cellphone at one store alone. It was bad. My friend was telling him to save it since he doesnt have a job. A few days later the cops showed up and took him away. My friend was not messed with since he had nothing to do with it and knew nothing. _________________ When I visit reality, I go as a tourist

Wow! I havn't heard about this yet, but I've become a bit of a hermit the last few days, not leaving the house.
Like you said Scmall I'm not surprised at all that Mike was involved in this, but it is a shock that Jeff was, and also how the way they went about the whole thing was stupid. _________________ What if there were no hypothetical situations? |

Dude, I have to tell you about when a mutual friend of ours had his PS3 stolen. Fortunatly our friend crossed the border all the time for he lived in Canada so he had its serial number registered there. Didnt take long for we all knew who took it and after a couple of weeks someone turned them in at a personal price. Our friend got it back and the theft and his buddy were busted. Our friend even got his PS3 back for he reported it pretty quick and directed the cops to customs to obtain the seriel number.
the worst part was that our friend had spent a few months saving up for that PS3 and it was stolen only a couple of weeks later. he was mad!
to top it all off, the theives just left the portable DVD player alone and the cash that was laying on the coffee table. the guys were idiots. _________________ When I visit reality, I go as a tourist

Well a trailer should be easy to find, but because you did not find it, it is probably now spare parts unfortunately. As for the crime, yeah that was big. It was done pretty poorly too. It seems like it would be messy or at the very least loud. They really needed to do a better job. _________________

| No offense but this thing just doesn't really interest me. I mean if I open up[ the Worcester paper I can see more articles then I like about people I know being arrested. :| Granted yours is a small town, but I guess I just grew desensitized to it. |

It is a small town that we live in up here. The biggest thing is that with an exception the theives who took Drieton's trailer, I know each and every thief/burglar involved with the two crimes that I have posted about. Out of the four thieves in toal involved, one we are all surprised to hear about for he was a good kid (at least until his life started going down the drain). It just means more when you know them. Doesnt matter if you hope you never have to see them again or not. _________________ When I visit reality, I go as a tourist

Yeah I think the big thing is just to not invite them to a party where you have valuable things. The one kid who shocked you all might have been forced to do it or might have got desperate. Still it is a shame, they basically ruined their lives. _________________

That much money, I believe he is looking at a good ten years in prison. Not to mention the damage he must have caused to get at the vault and open it too. _________________ When I visit reality, I go as a tourist

OK instead of mentioning about knowing the PS3 thing, can someone fill me in? This seems like it may be a very interesting story, but it has yet to be described. _________________
